UK Mandolin Luthiers

Richard Osborne hand crafts three different mandolin models, a tenor mandola, an octave mandola, bouzoukis and a mando-bass. Mandolins are available with carved top and back, carved top with flat back, and flat top and flat back. These instruments suit players from folk to classical.

David Freshwater offers several different mandolin options, including a standard mandolin (also available 60m/m deep), a Slimline mandolin (38m/m Deep), a guitar shaped mandolin, a 10 string model, tenor mandolas, octave mandolins and mandolas, and 10 string citterns.

There are three basic styles of archtop mandolins, mandolas and mando-cellos offered by Mike Vanden in the UK; the F5, the Simon Mayor and the A model. The F5 is based on a classic Loar model. The Simon Mayor model is based on the A model shape.

Matthew John Bascetta is a mandolin luthier in the UK. Other handmade acoustic instruments offered include steel string and classical guitars, mandolas, bouzoukis, dulcimers and banjos.

Thomas Buchanan is builder of fine acoustic instruments in the UK. He specializes in mandolins, 10 string mandolins, tenor mandolas, octave mandolas, citterns and bouzoukis. Thomas also offers harps, hurdygurdys and guitars.

Christopher Eccleshall is a UK luthier of mandolins, solid body electric mandolins, mandolas, balalaikas, acoustic guitars, electric guitars and basses. Chris was originally trained as a violin maker.

Phil Davidson works out of Bristol, building mandolins, guitars, banjos and ukuleles. Currently he offers three mandolins types; two oval-hole "A" types and an F-hole "A" type. All models are also available as octave mandolins, octave mandolas or tenor mandolas.

Nigel Forster, of the UK, builds his mandolins from European spruce and American maple. This offers the woody bass characteristics of a traditional American mandolin and the strong treble response of British designs. Adirondack spruce or Curly redwood are top wood options, as are rosewoods for the back/sides.

Gosden Guitars of the UK builds many different types of acoustic instruments, including flattop mandolins and guitars, electric lap steel guitars, Weissneborn lap steels, parlor guitars, left handed models and others. All instruments are hand crafted by one man from start to finish.

Robin Greenwood hand crafts acoustic instruments in the UK. The line-up includes a mandolin bass, a standard mandolin, jumbo acoustic guitars, hammered dulcimers, bouzoukis, 12 string electro-acoustic guitars, and others.

David Gregory is a UK based luthier of guitars and mandolins. He offers all mandolin family instruments, acoustic guitars, archtop guitars, classical models, electric guitars and basses. All instruments are of the highest quality.

Paul Hathaway offers four different models of mandolins, all of the flattop variety. Paul can build you just about acoustic instrument, including dulcimers, baroque guitars, basses, citterns, bouzoukis, lutes, mandocellos, violins, octave and tenor mandolas, solid body electric guitars, ukuleles and more.

John Marlow hand crafts his acoustic instruments one at a time. He builds mandolins, mandolas, electric guitars and violins using such UK native woods as yew, sycamore and walnut. All of his instruments are available with transducers and custom inlays.

Moon Guitars offers a full line of mandolin family instruments, including their Standard Series, A Plus E Series, Master Series and Electro Acoustic Series. Other instruments available include acoustic and electric guitars, custom builds and some vintage instruments.

Oakwood Instruments, located in the UK, offers over 10 mandolin models to choose from. Other instruments include mandolas, bouzoukis, citterns, acoustic guitars, banjos, dulcimers, harps, electric guitars and second hand instruments.

Graham Parker builds flat back mandolins and mandolas in the UK, using a variety of woods. Graham also builds acoustic and electric guitars and  basses. 

Pickard Acoustics builds mandolins, octave mandolas, citterns and bouzoukis. Also offered are acoustic guitars (including 12 string models), banjos and ukuleles.

Ken Powell offers seven acoustic instrument models to choose from, including an octave mandolin. The other instruments he builds include three acoustic guitar series', a tenor guitar, a mandola and a 10 string cittern.

Stephen Sedgwick specializes in harp guitars, but also builds mandolins, 12 string mandolins, a harp mandolinetto, a double neck guitar and mandolin, and standard acoustic guitars.

Andy Tobin builds a larger than average body mandolin with a 360mm scale length. It offers a clear bright tone with a distinctive midrange. The larger body gives this acoustic instrument more projection.

Joe White offers his F5 mandolins. These instruments are built in the UK and are exact copies of the 1924 Lloyd Loar Gibson model, made of Sitka spruce and Flamed maple imported from the United States. Joe also builds electric and acoustic guitars.
